Trakai
was a great find. It is about an hour on the bus to the west of Vilnius. Finding
accommodation wasn't easy but the town was rewarding once we sorted ourselves
out.
The castle is built on an island on the lake and walking around it was a pleasure.
It is very well maintained and an English guidebook is available.
We found a wonderful restaurant in the evening which overlooks the lake. Unfortunately
the castle isn't lit up at night, possibly something for their tourist board
to consider. There are also a couple of bars around, the best of which was
like an Alpine bar where you would go for some apres-ski!
The lake is often full of rowers as the national training centre is just up
the road. That's actually where we stayed and we watched teams from all the
Baltic States as well as Germany and Scandanavia racing in a regatta.
An hour or so on the bus from there took us to Kaunus.
